Red Wine Can Make You Live Longer

By Polly Perrot

We have heard so many things good things about wine in terms of how it can affect your health. More specifically, it is the compound in wine called resveratrol that is responsible for a lot of the health benefits that wine possesses. What's more, recent studies reveal that resveratrol is potentially able to extend your lifespan. Learn about this fact by reading through this article.

On July 13, the journal called Nature featured an article about a study done by biologist David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Texas, together with his colleagues from the University of Connecticut and Brown University in Rhode Island. They conducted a study that tackled the effects of resveratrol on the lifespan of fruit flies and worms.

The study showed that the fruit flies and worms fed with resveratrol lived a lifespan 30% longer than those that were not. This is a breakthrough study, although its application on human subjects has not yet been done. Since the biological processes in all creatures are very similar, there is a very big possibility that resveratrol is also capable of extending the lifespan of humans.

Even before this study, it has already been known that resveratrol is linked to protection against cardiovascular diseases. The reason being that resveratrol has a very high concentration of antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that destroy free radicals in your system that can cause a lot of illnesses.

However, in this study by Sinclair, it is not the antioxidant properties of resveratrol that extends life. Instead, the reason resveratrol lengthens life is because it mimics a calorie restricting mechanism that activates proteins called Sirtuins. Sirtuins are present in many animals and are responsible for regulating the aging process.

Resveratrol has long been known to reduce the chances of developing arthritis, improve skin integrity, improve liver function, decrease risk of developing infertility, decrease risk of suffering from strokes, and much more.

Wine, without a doubt, is good for a person's health. But it is very important that to remember that the health benefits of wine come with moderate consumption. Too much wine can harm your health instead of improve it. Moderate consumption is defined as drinking a maximum of one small glass of wine a day.
